Interior vs Exterior Paint: What Coquitlam Homeowners Get Wrong

Paint is paint, right? Not quite. This is one of the most common mistakes we see in Coquitlam homes — and it costs people real money to fix.

The Core Difference

Interior paint is made for a stable environment: it resists scuffs, stains, and scrubbing. Exterior paint is made to survive — UV rays, rain, freeze-thaw cycles, and mildew. In the Lower Mainland’s wet climate, that difference matters more than almost anywhere else.

The Mistakes We See Most Often

Using interior paint outside. It looks fine for a season, then it peels. Interior paint can’t flex with temperature swings or shed constant rain. On a Coquitlam fence, deck, or siding, expect failure within a year or two.

Using exterior paint inside. It’s technically possible, but exterior paint contains additives (mildewcides, extra VOCs) you don’t want in enclosed rooms — especially bedrooms. It also scuffs and marks more easily than interior formulations.

Skipping primer on bare wood and drywall. Paint sticks to primer far better than it sticks to raw surfaces. New drywall and bare exterior wood should always be primed first.

Painting over peeling paint. If the old paint is failing, new paint on top of it will fail too. Scraping, sanding, and spot-priming take time, but they’re the difference between a job that lasts 3 years and one that lasts 10.

Painting in bad weather. Exterior paint needs a dry surface and temperatures above about 10°C (50°F) to cure properly. Coquitlam’s fall rains end the exterior painting season — plan spring and summer projects accordingly.

The Simple Rule

Interior paint for controlled indoor spaces. Exterior paint for anything exposed to weather. Primer wherever the surface is bare, patched, or previously failing. Get those three right and you’re ahead of most DIY jobs.
